Is it possible to fit a door closer without an installation template? I understand the different mountings (standard, parallel and top mount. Although I don't really understand the reason for top mount as I've never seen one fitted that way). Does positioning need to be spot on or can you 'wing it' and get the positioning of the closer body and arms in the ballpark?

I ask, as a friend has 3 or 4 that he'd like to fit, if possible, but there are no installation templates.

Cheers

Fitted a few without a template, just use a couple of fixing holes to get the position correct before final fix with all screws. The arm from the unit should stick out at 90 degrees with the return arm fixed about 50mm from the vertical of the main arm.
