We are planning on getting a loft conversion done and wondering if a door at the top or bottom of stairs is a building regulations requirement or can we do without a door.

It does not need to be at the top or bottom of the stairs though.

If you have a door at the top, then you dont need one at the bottom. If you have one at the bottom then you don't need one at the top. you need to ensure when the doors open that it has the relevant clearances.

We needed to have a fire door at the top or bottom and all other doors except bathrooms had to be changed to fire doors to meet regulations.

In our recent conversion (1930s semi), only the new loft bedrooms had fire doors. Nothing else was changed except interlinked alarms in every room.
