I've been looking at a front door lock today and noticed the latch doesn't work from the outside handle but is key operated from the outside.

I took the handles off and the latch spindle is actually in two parts. The latch works from the inside handle.

Presumable a measure of security for an unlocked door?

If I want the latch to work of the outside handle, do I fit a solid spindle?

Does seem daft having key operated only latch on the outside. You could easily lock yourself out if you don't go outside with a key.

I'm obviously lacking in understand because the half spindle in the outside handle is redundant.

It's called a lever/pad set up, the thing with pvc and composite doors is unless you lock them once inside someone can just open your door and walk in, some want the security of the slam lock type thing like a yale lock on a wooden door

It's not unusual for people who don't lock their doors to complain that someone has walked in and helped themselves to handbag, car key, wallet, phone on hall table or nearby.

I appreciate the security aspect but I'll wager its not usual for them to lock themselves out if they forget to take a key when putting the bin out.

On ERA multi point and other similar ones there's a little plastic slider just under the latch so when you push the handle down and the latch retracts you slide the plastic tab up and it keeps the latch open, same principle as in this clip although I've never seen this type of snib they all do the same
