Hiya :D
with money not being our friend atm , and in desperate need to replace front and back doors , we bought 2 doors to replace them , they come up about an inch to narrow .
Which is best , add wood to the door ? or to the frame ? ive had friends advising both

TBH it would have been better to measure the openings and buy doors to suit, assuming they aren't non-standard sizes to begin with.

Adding timber to the edges will create more work and is unlikely to last very long, especially along the hinged edge.

What sizes are the openings?

Thanx for your responces !! :D
soz about my late reply ,we've been sooo busy with 2 kids burpdays ( now done n dusted) , plus crimbo stuff (still ongoin)

Its not the case that the doorways are usually sized , tho my neighbours has since said they are , its because at the moment , ive been ill last coupla years , even the IT n pc/laptop repairs havent really bought much in , so we are skint as fudge of late .
My wife found these lovely 2 heavy wooden doors on a facebook sellin page , a front n rear - really cheap , they are really nice doors , plus the price was right lol a mate who was around at the time ,said yh he would get these doors up n in - no problem , we have since fallen out :/

oh , as you asked , both door holes are 835mmx1950mm , thats with the stormgaurd (is thats what its called) at the bottom

OK, what I'm about to suggest may be a bit beyond you, but here goes -

Assuming your posts are not storey posts i.e. with glass above to let in light, then they should have the top rail checked to take the side jambs/legs, this needs to be cut by an inch and 12" packers put behind both side jambs/legs. To do this they will have to be taken out of the slap in the wall, would you know how to do this and more importantly would you be comfortable doing it? ...pinenot? :)

Hiya Pinenot :D
Thanx for your reply :D
That made some but not much sense lol
So your sayin , bulkin up the door frame is the best way forward , thats what i was goin with to start with , then my sons mates dad came up with the build up the door .
I do want to replace the door n frames at a later date , but atm i hav many more pressing repairs need doin first .
I may need a more ABC explanation ,
But i do feel competent enough to do it :D

Oh theres no window above door , just door n frame , this is an ex council house , so no expense spared in the build lol

Take a look at this sketch View media item 70465 assumptions - door is removed,
posts are removed
posts are taken apart

Now measure the new door accurately across its width @ three points - top -middle and bottom (it's essential these measurements are accurate to within 1/2 mm) The frame head check should be cut to the door top size - PLUS 8.5 mm, this will give you the clearance required for the door (4 mm either side, plus a bit). Re-fix the posts at the hinge stile only with the half packers added to the back face (remember this is half the difference between the old and new doors) Once the posts are in place, a tiny wedge to the bottom of the lock stile and the floor will hold this fine just now. Hang the door in the normal way, ensuring 4 mm clearance @ hinges and lined up flush with post > assuming no alts. required> fix lock stile of posts to suit, job done...pinenot :)

Noseyall...please allow the OP the choice of whether I'm right or wrong, as you would seem to suggest, if you don't mind that is...pinenot :?

Hiya :D hope everyone had a gud xmas n nye :D

obviously i dont kno what linings n casings are :S

am i out of my depth and/or in the wrong forums ?

No not the wrong forum, just beguiled by the wrong replies, all of thees terms used refer and are the same as door posts...pinenot :)

Thanx :D theres hope then :D

i can put my hands to most jobs , sometimes i like to or need to ask questions first :D

kk it looks like im buildin up the frame to meet the door ,
im presumin buildin up the lock side will be better than buildin up the hinge side ?!

Either side will do, although if your building UP the door frame(s) i.e. that would suggest to me you don't envisage taking the fame(s) out, but are contemplating filling the posts in situ am I right ?? ...pinenot :?

Thanx for response :D

Soz for the big gaps , i only had the forum details on my laptop , n the wife n kids keep nickin it ! finally got ya's to my main pc now :D

Kk , well my thinkin is , buildup the lock side , and add to frame , n not take the frame out .
1. coz it sounds like an easier job lol
2. the locks dont match up .
That seems logical to me , does that to you ?

this is only a temporary solution - ive said that before lol and will be pulling th elot out , with new door n frame , its on the to-do list lol
