Hi all,

I’m wanting to know if this is a sill and if it can be repaired? I have tried wood filler and painted it, but the paint always seems to peel. Using Rustins external black gloss.

If not, I think this is a composite type, can I replace with timber or would it need to be composite again?

Thanks

It looks like timber. It's not clear what needs to be repaired, but timber can normally be repaired.

Proper preparation is needed for paint to adhere.

Think it might look like timber because of the paint, but suppose it could be timber. There’s some splits on it, I’ll try and highlight them, but photos are on my phone, which I don’t have at the moment.

Scrape all that paint off.
Fill the cracks with a two-part epoxy external wood filler.
Sand smooth.
Polymer mastic between cill and frame and threshold strip
Repaint with a quality external gloss, two coats.

As @^woody^ says.

However, epoxy wood filler is expensive. The cheapest that I am aware of is Oxera. £25 for the two tub version.

Regular 2 pack filler is about 10 times cheaper (per ml/kg).

@^woody^ could I use CT1 instead of polymer mastic? as I already have some.

Would it be easier or cheaper to replace the step @opps or @^woody^?

Yes CT1 is a polymer mastic - being over-paintable is the main thing.

Replacement would be a lot more onerous, for no real gain or reason.

Any recommendations on the external gloss - does it have to be Zinser? Also, I think the step could be the cause of the laminate flooring warping and lifting. I have repaired it once, but has lifted again and still gets wet after raining.
