Hi There - I've started decorating my living room and thinking new door handles. Every single internal door in my house is hung like this.. Is it upside down? They were like this when I moved in.. Every door has a random handle push open and close where would you mount the door handle. going for a lever rose door handle? The obvious place is between the paneling but seems too high and might look odd. The standard height would take it further down but may still look odd.. Any thoughts?

I removed the brass knob handle and filled and painted ready for new..

thanks

Right way up. Google '30's panel door' images.

Seems link you can put the handle in either place, depending on your preference.

Known as a "one over three", for obvious reasons. This is the last remaining one in my house showing original position of mortice latch and bakelite handles.

I'd have a look at the doors and see if/where the original mortice latches are and if they can be salvaged in some way.

You'll get plenty of advice on the Woodworking or Windows and doors sections.

It’s a typical Edwardian style door (although carried on into the 1930s)

originally would’ve had a rim lock.

Thanks you guys for your input.. Looks like i was incorrect in assuming it was hung the wrong way. My house is indeed built in the 1930s so makes sense for these types of doors to be here.. Unfortunately the every door in the house has a random makeshift type door handles so I will have to go though all and standardise where I can. Looks like the location to go for, for the replacement handles aesthetically is between the two sets of panels.

Thanks again

Between the panels lies the mortice and tenon joint, which will be weakened if you cut into it.
