iv hacked off old render to existing brickwork in my living room, i want to dot an dab over this brickwork but is still very dirty and dusty any ideas for the best possible key for the dabs iv tryed cleaning them with water and thinking of sealing with pva any advise

a good soaking with a hose is what we do. 
turn the hose jet onto a shower spray, and soak the walls liberally.
