Dot and dab

Hi,

How do I dot and dab plasterboard to a chimney breast which is plaster on the hard. What is the best adhesive to use and how thickly do I apply it? Can I use no nails or would it be recommended to use plaster or joint cement etc?! The existing plaster is sound and I am dabbing on 9mm plasterboard

As long as the existing plaster is 'receptive' i.e. it is not painted or coated with anything that is likely to de-laminate once any adhesive is applied, then crack on.

You may also need to test the plaster in order to check whether it will blister or loosen once wetted. This will become evident should you need to apply any PVA.

Use gypsum powdered board adhesive (Gyproc, Knauf etc).

If there are problems with the existing plaster, either remove it completely or fix timber battens to the walls first then fix to these.

The plaster appears to be original grey plaster, with no paint or paper etc, it's not boss. Before dot and dab should I prime with pva?

Others might disagree, but if I am unsure about the key when dot and dabbing . then when it is gone off I fix mechanically with nailable plugs.

Belt and braces but drilling a few holes is worth it for peace of mind

Yeh there actually wooden dooks along the top of the wall so it may be a good idea to put more in for peace of mind, cheers
