Is this way better than just running a one cable spur to a new socket

Always better to extend, if you can.

And to replace cables rather than use JBs.

Joint boxes should be a last resort. Just take a single 2.5 cable from one of the existing sockets to the new position.

If you do use a joint box it should be accessible for future maintenance or be of the maintenance free type as made by Hager.
