Hello,

I have one light in the bathroom in the middle of the room on a wire with an energy saving bulb in. I want to jazz the bathroom up a little and was thinking about downlights. What are the rules on them in bathrooms can they go anywhere in the ceiling or have you got to avoid certain areas? I know this is the case with stuff on the walls but Im not sure about ceilings.

Thanks. :D

They need to be suitably rated for the environment. The Regs require IPX4 but they are usually manufactured to IP65. They don't need to be ELV types, but some prefer the light output.

The important thing is to determine what is directly above and to the side of the lights when they are fitted into the ceiling. Check this before you buy.

Also, to avoid the confusion surrounding other issues, buy fire-rated downlights and READ the instructions before buying/fitting.

If you choke them with loft insulation, they will break down!!

Thanks for your replies.

I have looked at the zones picture but I am still unsure, is the ceiling unzoned or does it depend on the height?

I want downlighters but I dont want the GU10 ones which burn loads of electricity are there good alternatives around?

Do I need an spark for this work or am I ok do it?

The void over the ceiling is just empty space as the ceiling was lowered so there is no insulation around.

Thanks again. :D
