downlights

It will depend on the type, number and whether your house is one or two storey etc.
If you go down the 'hole in the ceiling' type then you will need to ensure that they are fire rated, if there is living space above, the living room.
You will probably need access to the ceiling via the upstairs floorboards.

Alternatively, fit tracklighting to the position where the central ceiling rose is.

Why do you want downlights?

I have a total of 25 watts of lighting in my living room. A central pendant with a sexy shade, and two plaster uplighters. It looks very modern and stylish. Downlights arent the be-all and end-all. I had the house rewired when I moved in, but didnt bother with downlights due to their ineffectiveness at actually lighting a space. The total wattage of all the lights in my house is about 200. I'll bet you are planning more than this in your living room alone. Please dont. Its not nessecary. And if you do, investigate LED lighting as an alternative.

I do have downlights in the kitchen, but they are 26 watts each, and there are two of them. They are large fluorescent downlights, each containing two 13 watt lamps. The kitchen is very bright.
