My system drain point is on the return tail of the first radiator after the pump. Would it be better for flushing if it was further along the system?

Need more system info. Ideally you need to isolate the boiler and put FULL flow flush points on each of flow and return...
Filling and emptying does not flush the system.

I have a pair of disused tails/standpipes whatever capped off in the airing cupboard. Looks as though there was a rad in there once. Would that do as a flushing point?

It's a bungalow so no upstairs downstairs issues.

I have a some dead legs too where I assume a rad once hung. I'd think it would be fine to flush the system there, it hadn't occured to me though.

What do you think ChrisR?
