Due to the design of the WC pan I can't see or get at the bit where the plastic 90 degree soil pipe slips onto the ceramic outlet of the pan. I can only assume, as its a new bend, that the rubber seal is OK as it all looks "horizontal" and squared up. Where the other end of the bend goes into the hole in the floor and I can get at it all, looks OK and I have smeared tones of grease around the top to create an airtight seal. It still seems to pong and as its a cloakroom its a small space as well.

Now, I know the part that goes on the pan could be a poor seal but as I can't get at it in situ I need to remove the pan smear some "stuff" on the outlet and push the pan back onto it to ensure a good seal. Any ideas on what to use or a better method?

Take it out and use a flexi connector. these are usually about 385mm long so you should be able to connect both ends and ensure they are fixed properly before pushing pan back into final position. As you push pan into final position, the flexi pipe will recoil to fit the gap. If it is slightly too large to fully recoil, they can be trimmed by pulling the seal out of one end, trim to length and push the seal back in. See here, but the diy sheds sell them.

Confirms my thoughts on a realistic option. I have looked at them but I was a bit concerned over whether you could cut them shorter. Thinking about it and reading your reply, of course you can. they make them long to enable people to make their own judgement.

Thanks for that

I've used a few flexies but never noticed being able to cut the lenght down, so be careful when you buy. There are several types, some go much tighter than others on the bend.

More often though it's ok to use a fixed bend and shove the wc into it, as you've been trying. I've often put my belt round the back of such a bend to pull it forwards! SOme makes are a lot better than others.

Fiddled around with that principle last night. Just got home "kapow" smell gone. trick seemed to be lining the bend up with the WC exactly so the rubber seal is in complete contact all the way around. Obvious I know but I couldn't see it but the trial and error method seemed to have worked. That and the 3lbs of Vaseline Jelly smeared where the bend goes into the soil pipe in the floor. I think the lining up worked though.

What a relief. cheers guys
