Drainage for steps from patio to garden?

We've to'd and fro'd on ideas of how to transition from our patio up to our garden, which is about about 12 inches from slab to grass. We've come across this idea ( http://www.valleygardenlandscapes.com.au/projects/indoor-outdoor/ ) and really like the look of it, but I wonder what, if any requirements there would be for drainage like there is with a retaining wall?

Any info or advice would be greatly received.
