Draindown

i take it you have a cws in the loft that your hot and cold are being fed from if so just bung the outlets on the tank.

I think telling a DIYer to bung the tank is asking for trouble.

Lets not forget the cylinder should have a vent pipe as well so it won't hold a vacuum.

Come on dia, you don't need to vacuum the cyl to stop the hot water coming out the top.

what is it you wana do. basically bunging the outlet in the cold water storage tank.to the supplies aint dangerous.regard what someone has said.when youve bunged them up keeping the water in the cws then turn all outlets that are supplied on. including the toilet etc.after this you will then know if the pipe your cutting into is still active .e.g mains.this will be the pipe leading to the supply your trying to isolate.

Thanks Holty, All I want to do is replace a Wash hand basin but there are no isolation valves to the tap supplies. It's an old house with antequated plumbing, least disturbed the better. Access to the loft isnt easy either.

is there some fancy piece of kit that freezes the pipe locally

Yes but don't fry freezing the pipe in a hot airing cupboard like I tried to do yesterday!!

mmm there seems to be an awfull lot of residue water to drain off.
