Guy thanks for the help, I have learnt alot here.
To be annoying I have thought of an easier solution to all of this. Wait for it...
So how about I close both valves either side of the radiator, Undo the pipes either side and then swivel the radiator quickly and rest it sideways on something before doing the nuts back up?
This way the plasterer can get to the wall fine and I can leave it all connected but with the valves still closed untill a plumber comes round to fit my new rad.

Is fine... as long as you do not undow the nuts that connect the valves to the pipework.
