I have an old room thermostat that is served with a live neutral and earth wire.

I bought a Drayton RTS1 and thought all I had to do was wire it in.

I wired the N to N L to L and earth to earth. Switched on my heating. I turned the thermostat and it clicked, but the heating didnt come on.

Inside the RTS there is a 3rd connector. I tried putting the L to that one but then nothing happened.

Can anyone advise where I am going wrong? Do I have the wrong type of room thermostat?

The original stat was probably two wire (line and switched line - not line and neutral) The new is probably three wire and requires a Neutral for the anticipator. You have the worst case where it won't work at all without the Neutral, best case is they are inaccurate if working. You need to fit a two wire stat !

P.S What do the instructions say !!!
