No, seriously, when the cheapo drill is running free, it generates a lot of noise. Too much in fact. The moment I lower the chuck i.e. using the handle/lever, it goes to what I consider as normal operating noise, so the problem is no more. But running free it's just too loud. What's the easiest way to temper that noise? I would think some dampening bit between the chuck and quill should do it, but I've found nothing that stays put. Any suggestions?

Is it the belts running on the pulleys?
Until you put a load on they may be running a bit slack and setting up a resonance. Try tensioning the belts and see it it lessens the noise.
