Drilling a 30 mm hole in handrail and base rail at approximately 40deg

I need to drill some handrails and base rails at approximately 40deg about 90 holes at 30mm diameter for 30mm round spindles the handrails and base rails are not yet fixed anyone got any good tips on how to go about this? Thanks in advance rob

Round?
Most shaped spindles are squared off at the top so that they can be splay cut and fixed into pre-rebated rails. Fully round spindles will look weird - like prison bars.

Drill you hole in a block of wood at 90* then cut one end of that block to the desired 40* . This can then be placed and cramped in place and used as a guide to drill your angled hole .

So am I right I have to drill straight down into let's say a 3"x2" x 12" long then cut it across @ 40deg on the 2"section & that's it, thanks for your support rob

Yes that's pretty much it. I'd recommend practising on a bit of scrap first just to get the hang of it . One other thing is that I'd also recommend using something like an auger bit or at least something with some body to it to enable it to run in the former. If you were to use a speed bit for example once past the former a little it can very easily wander.

How on earth are you going to line the jig up accurately when the wooden jig will be obscuring the hole marks? I guess if you move the jig the same amount each time (top and bottom rails) it wont matter. Just be a case of trimming the rails to suit.

I think it's just a case of marking c/lines on the jig and rails etc. then if you line everything up prior to drilling you can't go wrong,

Yes hence the reason for practicing on a piece of scrap. Clamp the jig in place and mark one edge , drill the hole , remove the jig and simply measure how far the mark is from the centre of the hole . It doesn't matter what that measurement is just mark the hand and base rails up with that measure in mind.
