Hi, we have a traditional house built in late 80s, with wet verge.

The mortar the verge is crumbling.

We had a local roofer over and he suggested to take out mortar and undercloack board, then install a batton along the verge and screw on dry verge end caps.

Is this a proper way of doing it? or should I request to have the mortar replaced?

If you want to maintain the traditional roof get the wet verge reinstated.
Plastic verges are labour saving and look wrong on certain types of roof.

More maintenance saving.

We stick to a strict set of rules when fitting them. Always use SS fixings. The starter unit must be mechanically secure at the bottom and no gaping holes.

I only specify continuous dry verges, unless there is some specific (mainly aesthetic) reason not to.

Over the years I've found that many builders/roofers can't be relied upon to fit the individual types properly, or securely so some fall off very quickly. Not all builders/roofers but enough to need to design the risk and the problem out.

Also, on modern houses or those with barge boards, or any slate roof, continuous verges look better.
