I am going to paint a wooden beach hut and was going to sand it down to provide a key and then apply an oil based undercoat and then an oil based gloss coat.

In the paint shop I saw there was some Dulux water based exterior paint, on the instructions it said an undercoat is not necessary.

In your experience is the Dulux water based exterior paint a good option or should I go the old fashioned route?

Go the old fashioned route if you can get oil based. My expertience with water based is that it is junk especially "outdoor" water based.

Even if paint companies say no undercoat needed you are always going to get a better finish if you do undercoat

Has the beach hut been painted before ?

If it hasn't you will definitely need a primer before you paint it

And preferably 2 undercoats as well
