Clueless question of the night!

Have put up some large ceramic tiles, with quarter inch grout gap.

After putting grout in joins, do I run the wet sponge in line with the gaps, or across the gaps to finish the grout?

quarter inch is very large for wall tile joints! be sure you use a "wide-joint" grout.

after you put the grout in the joints, lightly sponge the joints diagonally across - this will stop the grout being dragged back out.

only after the joints have firmed up do you want to run the sponge along the joints to smooth them over

Those are some mightly grout joints. May i suggest after it has been cleaned as above and allowed to go off that you consider sealing them. Not always needed but with that thickness chances are they will get something splashed on them.

Lithofin Grout Protector is a good one..
