Civilised countries do not have the death penalty.

The death penalty is not justice, it’s a knee jerk reaction to abhorrent crimes, but it’s not justice.

It’s often considered to be retribution, but really it’s more revenge.


If a child is murdered, the parents can never get over that, the death penalty won’t get their child back, most parents won’t get over it, many will end up divorcing. The rest of their life will be forever marred by sadness. Justice in that sense can never be served, in fact the death penalty might almost feel like the killer got off easy.

And the long drawn out years spent in death row probably extends the suffering of the parents and prevents closure. It does the same for the killers family.
