Duravit push button flush

I'm trying to replace the chrome push button flush on a Duravit starck cystern but have hit a problem.

The new flush mechanism looks like it pushes into the hole and then screws tight. Problem is, the central spindal from the old mechanism is still there.

Do I need to yank the old one out with pliers or dismantle something?
