As part of the induction for my new job as apprentice electrician I have to attend the above. I wanted to know what to expect so searched on YouTube and came across this:

Is this what I'm to expect? I know they take health and safety seriously but I really didn't think it would be so scientific! Are there any other less expensive looking methods used?

It is however nice to know that I won't be crawling around in lofts with a badly fitting and inadequate dust mask! I have used cheap masks before in my own loft and always found myself short of breath and having to take frequent breaks, even then I found that my snot was black afterwards. Cheap dust masks shouldn't be allowed any sort of certification.

I was trained last year to do fit testing. Although our solution is sweet.

I thought you should have sweet and bitter solutions and change them at random to ensure that test subjects weren't cheating.

A less expensive option is to get a JSP Force 8 mask (under £30 even at Screwed-Up). Almost uniquely these have a face seal self test facility which allows the user to check their own face fit. They will accommodate 1 to 2 days of stubble growth without the seal failing and are far more effective than many paper mask could ever be. Many employers seem willing to buy replacement filters for them as well
