Hi we are doing some diy & have found an old earth cable which goes from an old oil boiler which is not being replaced & has been isolated - the wire goes from the boiler through to the mains water connector - can we remove the wire? or clamp off?

There is still an oil tank which will not be used, does that make a difference. We are getting rid of the whole oil system.

It's the presence of a metallic pipe entering your house from outside that needs to be bonded.

When you remove the pipe, or cut it at the point of entry so it no longer enters your house, you can remove the bonding cable, if you see any benefit in removing it.

The reason is that earth potential inside your house might not be the same as outside. Bonding the pipe means you will not get a shock from touching it or, for example, a person servicing the boiler.

Incoming metallic services for gas, oil and water pipes (less often now, iron or lead waste pipes) and metal ventilation ducts have to be bonded for the same reason. Plastic pipes entering the house are non-conductive so are not bonded.

Thank you both for your help - i think we need to get an electrician to be on the safe side.

Ok will do - the problem came about because whoever wired it wrapped it over a pipe in the bathroom & we basically wanted to remove it or just correct it so it is straight - seriously this house is held together with blue tac & super glue!

Show us a pic, perhaps it can be tidied.
