Earth links on galv trunking.

Hello All,
Could somebody explain why earth 'tags/links' are used on 'metal' trunking please ? I would have thought that using the couplers would give enough mechanical continuity if fitted correctly ( kind of hard to fit them incorrectly ?). And the tags are made to fit the coupler fixings ?
If they are needed to be fitted then would it not be better to drill and fit them independently ?
Sorry, As you can see I am slightly confused (again :( )

Thanks very much

If using the trunk as a CPC, the copper (tinned) links had to be used.

These days you run a seperate CPC anyway, so can ommit the links. for the cost and the time they take to fit, you may decide to use them anyway.

They are still included because some jobs are specified to use trunking/conduit as CPC, (still allowed in regs).
Agree they would be better with seperate fixings, not the loose oversized holes provided.
I fix them to the back using short SPAX screws, takes seconds and can only help with continuity.
