Earthing At Pendant

P

person

I had to change a pendant in a cupboard for someone and when i went to do it i noticed there was a 1.5mm twin and eart going to the attic for a light, everything was connected as normal but the cable from the switch to the light in the cupboard had no earth (it had been cut off). The earth from the attic light was connected in the earth block in the pendant. Is this safe as i would have thought you'd have to have a continuous earth back to the mains?

Yes you should have a continuous earth. Is there enough cable to re-terminate including the earth?

Once upon a time, way back before people invented metal fittings and switches 'old school' cut the earths back on switch wires because at the switch they didn't do anything.

It's all too common.

If the property has any metal clad switch plates or metal light fittings then the earth is a safety essential.

Since you mention earths at the ceiling rose you will likely find all the in and out LNE feeds are earthed, so there is some earth continuity, just not at the switches !

A PITA unless the switch wire has some give and you can feed more cable through and strip back the TE to get the earth core.
