and off parallel to the pipe. Will this fail the gas safety check or be NCS, it is easily accessible in this position and marked as such

reportable to the grid, they will come and change it. They will ask you to leave it turned off.

About 15% of those I see are incorrect and cannot be modified.

Even if seen by NG they never get changed.

I have never encountered one that has been reported and it would surprise me if they did change one in the less easy cases.

Can only assume they were fitted like that because the installer was lazy!

As everyone else says, as long as it falls to the off position it is fine.

If it doesn't fall to off then report to National Grid (number on the front of the meter)

In the past when I have encountered them I At Risk it. If it is not possible to fix it myself. (depends on the tap)

Mine is incorrect, and cannot be altered. NG are aware, was picked up when they came out to a leak, (caused by NG when they changed the meter and didnt tighten up one of the unions).... The engineer spoke to his superior, also mentioning that the supply runs under the house to the kitchen and cannot be isolated, also the governor was probably older than he was!

The NG side of the meter dates from town gas days, but basically whilst they are aware the service is NCS on several things, they are not willing to do anything until it starts leaking....

yes. you push down thru ninety degrees to turn off and it will not rotate past that point - in fact it is not possible to push it in any other direction due to the stuff surrounding it, so as long as you know which way is on it is perfectly safe but obviously gas engineers have their rules to follow.
