32 year old property. Board change in 2007, split load. Socket circuit serving all household. The 32A fuse was on the non RCD side!! hmmmm!!.

Mistake or did the sparky "know what he/she was doing"?

Report finished by 1.30. Review with owner, she is renting it out. 0.02 M ohms neutral to earth. decision to sort out there and then. Now, I started to break down the ring, several had been inspected anyway, but needed to be loosened and separated again. Human instinct to start with easiest. So beaking down the ring and testing each cable. It had to be the last one did'n't it? The integrated washing machine (fitted prior to 2007) with no switch fuse above. pattress screw just nicking neutral in back box.

lesson 1) i think i should, in future, sperate the ring at the cu and then break the ring at what seems to be (could be) half way round the ring and then at least i am roughly halfing the possibilities after testing the IR again. Idiot.

lesson2) Remember that there are proper dodgy installers out there and remember to always test prior to quoting a board change (which i do) But not to get lazy.

Are you sure it wasn't the washing machine giving you the 0.02 Mohms? I would have thought that a screw nicking the neutral in the box would have given you 0Mohm.
