Recently one of my sockets blew, due to a loose wire I presume, and as expected it tripped the mcb. I replaced the offending socket and turned the power back on. The mcb no longer trips out but there is no power to any of my sockets on the circuit. Anyone got any ideas

Are you sure the socket in question was the culprit? If so, and assuming this socket is on the ring main, it sounds like the mcb itself has given up. Try borrowing one off another circuit (of the same rating obviously), and if this one trips your short circuit lies elsewhere (assuming the new one is wired correctly). If you still have no power then you have to investigate the R/M further.

what happens? does it trip or is there no supply?

If it is no supply i would suggest you leave it all turned off and check each and every socket, make sure all the connections are ok.

One other thing, are you sure it is the right mcb? (sorry but i have to ask) it should have 2 red wires attached to it

Agree with breezer, you could possibly have a second socket thats give up the ghost, or worse, a cable thats failed (hope not).
Copper does stiffen with age and can snap if you play push me, pull me (as I found out !!)

Are you sure you reterminated the new socket correctly, red or brown is live, black or blue is neutral, earths sleeved in green yellow and terminated.

Are all the core bare ends clean and bright metal.

I doubt that after 9 years Mitchell is still wondering what to do about the problem.

Nice on Ban.

although I can trump it.

About 20 years ago I had an elderly customer, always called me on a Sunday to ask for estimate, accept estimate etc etc.

He wanted an alarm system.

Battery only.
To protect rear windows only.
Kept stating "That`s where they got in!".
I could not convince him a modern system mains/battery to protect at least the whole ground floor.
On finishing install I asked him when it occurred expecting him to answer 2 or 3 weeks ago or a few days before he first called me.

His answer was "26 years ago!"

LOL.

I kid you not!
