How do I check a thermostat in a cooker to see that it is corectly working or not? Is it straight forward to replace?

One thing which concerns me greatly is when the oven reaches it's max temp setting, all the house electrics trip and go out, this has happened several times.

Thank you

check the spade connectors to the thermostat electrics
possibly contaminated
you need to check with a multimeter the ohms rating
somebody will be along soon to tell the correct rating

but it would seem the thermostat actually senses the temperature correctly anyway

If your house has RCD protection and that is what is tripping out I would check the element.

When they start to fail in some instances the resistance to earth in them lessens as they get hot causing earth faults and tripping of the RCD.
