The bulb in my mums electric garage door opener.......

keeps blowing. Its a 12 v 21 w bulb we have tried a couple of times as this is what was in the unit. Here is a picture of the bulb fitting...

It blows after a few openings.

Any ideas what could be causing it to blow frequently? Poor quality bulbs? Should I try cleaning the contacts in the bulb fitting? Could there be a fault with the unit?

I assume that takes a lamp similar to a car indicator lamp or rear fog lamp, and maybe the voltage regulation leaves something to be desired.

You could try a 24 Volt lamp in place of the 12 Volt one. It won't be so bright, but brighter than a blown lamp.

Or maybe an LED lamp would fare better Some are happy working over quite a wide range of voltages.
