hope you can help .i need to install a changeover switch just after the suppliers incomer , the suppliers meter is about 1m away from the planned position of the change over switch, the consumer unit this is all supplying is about 20m further on supplied by a 25mm cable .i plan on installing a 100a switch fuse to protect this run of cable .my question is which side of the changeover switch do i put the switch fuse .thanks

Assuming the changeover switch is also rated to 100A, it would make sense for the switchfuse to be installed after the changeover, as this will protect the 25mm cable run irrespective of the position of the C/O swith contacts. However, you may want to speak to your supplier (and eventually get put through to the DNO) to see if they are happy for you to have their service fuse protecting this installation. Personally, I can't see much difference between your scenario with a 100A C/O and a standard install where the supplier's fuse protects a 100A DP isolator.

It just struck me that someone who had to ask a Q like that was probably not competent to be doing a job like that.

I hope you mean after the supplier's meter - you can't install a changeover switch (or anything else) between the incomer and the meter, it's not yours to touch and I doubt your supplier is going to agree to help you tap off a feed before the meter - I guess they might agree to install a sealed changeover switch for you, and a suitable connector, at a price.
