Hi all

Right I've just done a stupid thing and drilled through the wire that supply's all the lights in the house. I can see the bare wire so I can't tape it, so the question is how can I repair it without phoning an electrician.

Thanks

is it in a wall, under a floorboard or in the ceiling?

The only real way to fix it safely is to remove the broken section and replace with new

Unless you are "competent" I'd phone an electrician.

Damaged cables are a fire risk.

Isolate supply, strip back damaged cable and connect a new section into it using two junction boxes on either end, or if you have enough spare, you might get away with one junction box.

If it is the wall you need to us an MF junction box http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/ASJ804.html[/QUOTE]
So you say.

Not splashed out on Amd 1 yes - does 526.3 agree with you yet?

What is the wall made of?
Also - where in the wall is the cable?

Should it be there?

If not then repairing and re-burying it is not an option.

We discused this just after the BGB was published and, yes it does - now that Ashely are manufacturing and selling the ones with the specified 'MF' symbol moulded onto them (they went through an interim period of sticking on MF symbol labels - not'sure if that's 'allowed'!).

However, although the regs now accept that these don't need to be accessible, in the real world there is 'inaccessible' and 'inaccessible'. In the context of this thread, I wonder if anyone reading this would be comfortable/confident enough to bury one of these things in a wall?

Kind Regards, John.

It always did agree with me
The MF Junction boxes now have a BS number, BS5733.
The requirement is
Regulation 526.3 (vi) BS7671:2008 (amendment 1, 2011)
Which allows MF JBs to be installed
and goes as so
Equipment complying to BS 5733 for maintenance-free accessory and marked with the symbol MF and installed in accordance to the MI.

It did not.

This has a BS number too:

Fair enough - so now it says you can.

But it didn't prior to Amendment 1.

Could well have been.
look here then

I'm not taking issue with the fact that it does now,....
That makes sense. Only a complete fool could argue about 'now', given that it is now so explicit in BGB.

.... just PBoD's claim that it always did.
I'm not sure whether he meant 'always' or 'always since BGB was published'. Anyway,as you know, prior to the BGB, the question was very hotly and widely debated, not only in this forum (hence certainnly not just PBoD) - even though I personally never really understood how the pre-BGB regs could be interpreted as meaning that they didn't have to be accessible.

Kind Regards, John.

It's in the wall
Is it possible to pull it out and replace the cable - that would be the best and safest option by a long way.
Or failing that, can you pull a new length in over part of the run so you can put a joint somewhere less completely hidden (eg under the floorboards).
