My single electric light switch in the utility is temperamental and doesn't make the connection to switch on (though always switches off). Is it straight forward to replace? Obviously I would turn off the mains supply before doing anything. Is it just a matter of putting the right coloured wire into the correct place as before?

That is indeed correct......you may just have a single pole switch (2 terminals) or a two way one......which will have 3 terminals but only two are used. If its the latter, one terminal will be marked 'com' (common) often enough.
If the switch works upside down, then either reverse the wires or turn the entire switch.
John :)
