I've had some pipes boxed in and I was hoping to paint them the same colour as the wall which is emulsion paint and then gloss the bottom part at the hight of the skirting board to blend in.

Is there a way to prime and undercoat so I can use both paints or should I forget about the emulsion as I've read that emulsion and wood can cause problems.

Use an acrylic primer undercoat and you won't have any bother.
