Anyone got one, whats the opinion good/bad?

I got mine yesterday from british gas, simple enough to connect up but the instruction leaflet may as well been written in mandarin. Had to ring BG up for my tarifs so i could set the monitor up properly.

I find that im constantly checking it and turning everything off as i walk round the house and as we speak im using £0.06p an hour of electric, thats just my PC and the imersion heater thingy im my airing cupboard, if i boil a kettle it jumps up to £0.57p an hour.

Think i'll be going next door for my drinks from now on

Strikes me at a first glance... Usage monitor will be ok until one knows what's what (not rocket science)... What then?

The devil lurks behind the scenes, different tariffs for differing times of day?? More complex billing more opportunity to screw the customer - you know, that person who pays the piper top whack for poor quality service - greater difficulty in measuring one supplier against another...

I cannot imagine (our) expenditure on 'smart meters' is about the abolition of estimated billing - A simple 10 mins on meter / bill reading followed by how to telephone supplier usually sorts that - Or about 'look what you are using ! Switch stuff off !' Both very short term situations... A smart meter is forever, a great opportunity for the rip which must surely follow !!
:D

you monitor is not set up properly then as a kettle will burn 2.5 to 3 kw off electric an hour so whilst its on it should be registering dependant on unit cost about 20 to 30p an hour although a 2 cup boil will be around 1/2p
thats unless it was already reading around 30p before you plugged the the kettle in

Theres not actually much setting up to do apart from entering your tariff, i had to ring BG for mine as the hopeless instruction leaflet said get them from the BG website but after creating an account and seeing my details the tariff wasnt there

The tariff im on is......

Tariff 1, ie 7am till midnight = 0.21p
Tariff 2, ie economy 7, midnight till 7am = 0.05p

These are the only settings you enter.

Right i've changed it from pence per hour to Kw and with just my PC and telly and stuff all off but on standby im drawing 0.30 kw, turn kettle on and it goes upto 2.56 Kw

So 2.56-0.30=2.26 is within your 2.5/3.0 kw

Anyway im glad its got you all talking, maybe to point of them is to make you paranoid and keep all stuff turn off

i would look at changing your supplier i pay around 8.5 p per kw all the time [plus standing charge] and around 4p per kw gas[plus sc]
