I had a new door made and ERA locks fitted but the thumbturn cylinder lock looks the wrong size. I don't know the dimensions of the lock but the door is 55mm thick.

There's an 8mm gap as seen in the below pic. Is this normal? I'd like there to be no gap. What cylinder dimensions are the right ones for my door?

TIA

OK, so the outside escutchron is held on by screws from the inside, I think. If it is sufficiently strong and armoured, it will give some protection against attacks seeking to snap the cylinder from outside. The nozzle of the cylinder has to be completely surrounded so it can't be grabbed. It's OK if it is fractionally recessed into the escutcheron.

You can get escutcheons in various thicknesses. Examine yours. If it is not strong enough, I'd look at fitting a new one, and measuring the combined thickness before buying a new cylinder to suit. I prefer the longer outdoor steel shields that have extra pegs or screws making them harder to break. I used to use "lock guard" but I don't know if they still sold.

It's perfectly normal, here's mine I keep on the van...

These are composite door barrels and are 35mm/35mm as our doors are 44mm plus the handle backplates, your cylinder will be longer, potentially 45/45 but you'd need to remove it to confirm. Cylinder lengths go in 5mm increments so whatever your inner half measures you could knock off 5mm but the thumbturn would still be 3mm away from the escutcheon, what you have now is correct, but personal preference is something else
