The bulb I'm trying to replace is an ES screw fit bulb, and the one I bought to replace it isn't working. I've noticed that the terminal at the tip of the bulb is much smaller diameter than the one on the replacement bulb. I've searched google and cannot find any explanation as to why there are two different sizes of the end terminals, and no bulb specifications seem to mention this. It's as if there are two different standards, nothing I've read would suggest there are.

Just the way there made, they used to have the filament through the hole and then solder over it.
Modern ones are proberly better made and use less solder to cut cost.

But old bulb is an incandescent type, and I bought a Philips Spiral CFL and it is this that has a large terminal that doesn't seem to make a contact in the fitting. Is it possible that other brands will have a smaller more pointed terminal?

Update: fixed the problem by bending the terminal up in the fitting. Presumably the more pointed type on the bulb had bent the springy terminal down in the fitting.

With some Es cfl s the fatter lamp body hits the lamp holder body first, preventing the lamp going right in.
The centre contact then fails to reach the pin.

Whereas a normal lamp screws in further.
