Ethernet

Powerline ethernet in general, or their product?

I've used a few powerline ethernet adapters in the past, they never gave the speeds quoted but alright for non speed critical things. Prefer ethernet cable where possible though!

The data over mains use radio frequency carriers along the mains cables and can result in RF being radiated from the mains cables to the detriment of other equipment using RF.

The effect on other equipment is almost insignificant where the live and neutral run side by side as in the twin and earth supplying sockets. It is when there is just one side in the cable such as the live and switched live to a switch, that radiated RF can be ehough to have a significant effect.

IMO, if you have a need to use these devices, a simple WIFI bridge would be far better.

We have used something similar on one occasion. On a caravan park where the clubhouse WIFI was being extended out to the field. A WIFI access point on the building covered the closest pitches, but the furthest pitches needed some coverage too. A WIFI bridge would have worked, but the customer got us to try a pair of these mains plugs to provide a link to a WIFI access point up the far end of the field. It did work.

Cat5e or Wifi imo.

They work well, but cause issues with the amount of RF they spit out. Talk to any radio operator.

I have never used these ethernet over mains devices, but my main concern would be what if one of the adapters circuitry failed, and mains voltage appeared on the ethernet cable(s)? Surely this would quickly fry the connected equipment (before the CAT5e failed)? With hundreds, possibly thousands, of pounds worth of computer equipment at risk, is it worth it for the sake of running a length of Cat5e or even a WiFi repeater? (Afterthought. Possibility of fire from melting cables?

No idea what's in the adapters, but an opto-isolator would make them pretty safe.

BT Broadband recalled one type that they had been giving free with a Broadband package and replaced them with the strong recoomendation to stop using the original ones.
