Evolving Language

You have giraffes under your skirting?

Using fewer for countable things (how I learnt at school) seems to be dying out. Some say it is a bit snobby to say fewer.

Like the ubiquitous "10 items or less" checkouts.

Working in East London I become acquainted with a couple of white lads with Jafakan accents. Good lads I liked them. They asked me to take them on. I said I wouldn't because of their Jafakan accents. They both agreed that is what was stopping them from getting on on life.

I took on a young very intelligent Black German lad who knew how to present and conduct himself. Unfortunately it was not the trade for him.

But it is so important when entering people's homes and the way you speak is very important.

Not really the best way of looking at it:
Use fewer for plural words - fewer pounds; fewer cars.
Use less for single words - less money. less traffic.

seems to be dying out.
Only because people aren't taught properly.
It is probably because the teachers don't actually know. The alternative is that they are being taught wrongly on purpose.

This the trouble; it is just what people get used to.
You/nobody would say "I have fewer money" or "There is fewer traffic".

Like the ubiquitous "10 items or less" checkouts.
It gets complicated when saying something like "I have less than fifty pounds" when the fifty pounds is being treated as a single amount.
