I'm currently digging the footings for an extension. As per the pics I am removing a small retaining wall. I also want to remove the soil from behind it, stopping about 800mm from the trunks of that 10ft Beech hedge. My question is, is there a danger of damaging the roots?

Anyone with experience of this sort of thing to give any tips?

Hire a digger?

The water demand from the growing elements will influence the depth of the foundations. Did your architect not note the trees/hedges etc and recommend water demand/root barrier mitigation?
