Walls or floor?... 
...I wouldn't put anything powdery onto it. If you can, try to remove it with a scraper. Try putting something on it, to soften it and make it easier to remove. What type of glue was it anyway, and what was it sticking down/up? Sorry for the questions.

You hear that from some expert in the pub?
I would try and remove the worst of it, even warming it up a little with a hairdryer might help.. just a thought.
