Do I need an expansion gap around a hearth? The flooring is going to be solid oak, size of room about 12' x 11'. The hearth is sitting in front of a solid fuel fire.

It's not a problem if I do, I'd just need to get some beading to cover it that's all. Alternatively I was wondering if an expansion gap at one side of the room would suffice, thus alowing me to butt the board up against the hearth.

Thanks for any tips.

Always leave an expansion gap around the perimeter of a wooden floor - not just on one side, so also around a hearth.
You won't be able to 'instruct' the floor where to expand to. ;)
