Expansion Joints in Fascia Board

Hi

I am in the process of fitting new fascia board. I have done one side of the house, but have recently read that there should be a 5mm expansion joint.

Should this be at both ends of the board and is it critical that this is followed. The sections that I have done so far only have the joint at one end.
