I recently had a Rayburn wood burning cooker installed that connects to the radiators in my house. Having looked in the loft it would appear that the expansion tank is made of plastic. Can this be right as my understanding is that an expansion tank would need to be metal as the water going into it would be hot?

Thanks

Iain

If that were the case then a few million plastic tanks will need changing.
Its fine and no hot water should enter the tank. It simply allows for the small rate of expansion of the system water when the heat is on.

Thanks for your answer this really helps out and I can stop worry now.

Perhaps i can give you something else to worry about - not really.

But do go and see if the plastic expansion tank ( and any other plastic tank in the loft ) is sitting on an offcut/sheet of plywood or similar. The whole base of the tank should be supported.

Come back here if the base of the tank is unsupported.
