The guy down the road has driven his van around without MOT for the past month. What is likely to happen to him in a legal sense? (if anything).

Depends. If he does not get caught, likely nothing.

If he has a crash, and his insurance co. find out, they will void his policy. If the cops find out, they will probably prosecute for not MOT & insurance.

You need an MOT to get a tax disk - tho doubt he will be bothered about that.

His tax isn't due for another couple of months.

In Australia the mot has to coincide with the tax disc.

For my last two MOTs, the certificates are computerised and when it comes to tax renewal, I renew it on line - no showing insurance or MOT - they already have the information on their (Big Brothers) computers. It is much easier than queueing in the post office for hours - when you've found somewhere to park.

If you are caught without MOT I think it is a fine and/or loss of points.

Lack of mot was a standard £60, maybe £100 today, just think, no mot could mean anything, from no brakes working, rotten chassis, and all you got was a fine, no points

They got it wrong many yrs ago

they don't listen to common people

How do you Know this Joe,,,,,, Is it really you.
Train of thought, Illegal imigrants dont have MoTs so why should I :?:

No MOT may well mean no valid insurance ,

To drive the vehicle without MOT and insurance could mean the vehicle gets crushed...

Not me. It's a guy two doors down that drives an old banger with a blown exhaust. He reckons he hasn't got the time to get it fixed (but more like hasn't got the money). He's got no intention of getting it sorted until after the new year. The thing is that we've got those pale green cameras around here that check your Tax etc - will that flag him up as 'no MOT'? Why don't they send you a reminder when your MOT is due? I've forgotten in the past.

so you dont KNOW then...

What's your problem? I told you that his exhaust was noisy and when I asked him what he was going to do about it he said he hadn't got the time to sort it and that it was out of MOT as well.

no problem - just unlike you I don`t believe everything people tell me, strikes me you`d report him on hearsay thats all

If a cop car is behind him and the cop is a right barsteward, he can check from his police vehicle.

My friend got caught like this, she had tax, mot, but her insurance had rang out the day before, and was on her way to renew it, (what she told me), and the cops pulled her over, after explaining where she was going, she then asked them why did they pick on her.
The cop said, that they were alerted by some sort of tracker thing they have that shows you have no tax/insurance/mot, so they pulled her over.

I have heard of something along those lines, but not too sure what actual equipment they have in thier vehicles.
