Extend existing ring or whole new ring?

Hmm. Hard to say if the wiring is from the 60s or not.

The double back box looks more recent. The use of green and yellow sleeving is a lot more recent than the 60s too.

Perhaps it was a single socket converted to a double??

Are you certain this is a 60s house?

For sockets, it was common to use stranded cable up until about 1970, then solid cables were used.

I wonder if this house is a little older than the 60s, and was re-wired, hence that messy bunch of cables at the consumer unit. A messy bunch of cables with a cable tie is certainly quite 'modern'.
