Do people tend to have asbestos testing before walls are knocked down? We didn't and the builders didn't mention it. I live in a 30s house. What are the chances they could have missed some in the wall that was knocked down (would AIB have been easy to spot for example? Or do they just go for it and knock it down assuming there's nothing there?

If it's just a normal load-bearing wall that's been removed, asbestos is unlikely to be present.
As Tony says. Asbestos products tend to be in obvious places in domestic properties, not hidden in walls.
However, new CDM Regulations which now apply to homeowners and domestic builders does require that a full asbestos survey is carried out, and targeted (ie invasive testing) is done to certain areas or materials as necessary before any work is started.
The problem as I see it, is that not many people do get these surveys done, and it will only take one shrewd law firm to catch onto this, and then the claims will come from workers who "may have" been exposed to asbestos and were not warned.

An external wall was knocked down and a window upstairs as made into a door into new section of house. So builders would have spotted any panelling etc that could have contained asbestos in the knocking down process?
